The first thing that is necessary to consider is to look at where the crabs are kept. The ones kept in a dry place should be your first bet. This is because the ones stored in water tanks will use up more energy and end up losing their energy reserves more rapidly. You may try to find out from the seller when the crabs were actually caught. Kindly leave crabs that have more than two days after being caught.
Do not ignore the crab’s activity level. The crab that you buy should not be either be dead nor dying. What you want is a live crab. The reason for this is that the carcass has a very short lifespan.Your choice should be the ones that are feisty and aggressive. The crabs belly is another thing that you will need to inspect.Take special consideration to the underside, specifically the light-colored flap. The difference between males from females is that the bellies of the males are narrower while the females are wider and rounded. Also, feel the firmness of the belly since a fleshy crab will have a yellow belly that is tinted and bulging. This can easily be done by use of a finger that easily tests firmness in the belly.
Choose crabs that have dull shells. Do not go for the bright ones.Actually, the ones with battle scars or even scratches are better. If a shell is worn out, it means the crab is about to molt and shed the shell it has, and it is also fleshy. It is also helpful to suss out the smell.
The quality of the crab can also be checked by looking at the crab’s claw. The way the crab claws are used is another way to check. Pay emphasis on the right claw that is used to crush the prey. Are there any blunt or fluttered teeth?
